This weekend sees some very important championship action for Clonard as club competitions reach the crucial last round stage of the groups.
On Friday night our adult men’s team travel to Carlanstown to play Drumconrath in their final group game. Clonard need to secure a draw or a win to avoid the dreaded relegation playoff but results elsewhere on the night could be good enough to ensure Junior A football next year, if Clonard were to lose to the North Meath side. It’s in stark contrast to the build-up to the last game only two weeks ago against Moylagh where a win would have put them in pole position for a quarter final spot. Such are the small margins in championship football as our lads lost out by a single point in Kildalkey.
On Saturday afternoon St. Finian’s Park will host it’s first ever senior championship match when Summerhill and Na Fianna lock horns for a place in the Meath senior championship quarter final. Inter-county referee Cormac Reilly is the man in the middle for this crunch encounter. It promises to be a mouth watering tie with so much as stake for these two rival clubs. Throw in is at 4pm and all club volunteers will be out in force to ensure smooth and efficient running of this big occasion. The Park and pitches are in fantastic order in advance of this game, well done to head groundsman Leonard Farrell and his grounds committee. On Sunday evening the ‘Park’ will host its second championship game of the weekend when our adult ladies team take on Gaeil Colmcille from Kells in the Junior C championship. After winning their last two games on the bounce Shane Reilly’s troops will be looking for another win to keep their qualification hopes alive with two rounds remaining. Throw in is at 7.15pm Sunday evening.
And if all that action isn’t enough, sandwiched in between them is the first round of the Under 13’s league where our young boys take on Carnaross in St. Finian’s Park at 12.30pm on Saturday. It’s the club’s first time in several years to take part in this competition as a stand alone team following the break-up of the amalgamation with Longwood. Best of luck to the boys and to their coaches Paddy McHugh and David Hannon.
So make sure to get yourself out of the house this weekend to support your local club, C’mon Clonard!
